Service Learning

Service-learning offers a unique opportunity for students to get involved with their communities by integrating service projects with classroom learning.

PBL is individual students creating projects. Service Learning is when students work together to create a group project.

The trademarks of Service Learning in Kornerstone School are student voice & student choice. Students will work to create MicroProjects & MacroProjects. Students will work in groups with clearly defined roles. Through Service Learning, students become involved in the community and become aware of their role as citizens living in a democracy.

Students are expected to participate in at least two Service Learning projects per year; unless, they are in a leadership role.

Students in Kornerstone will go through the following progression; starting in 10th grade, students are paired with a community member in a field of interest. As a 10th grader, studentís engage in a job shadowing experience with their community mentor. The mentor then takes the role of the advisor on one of the student's projects as an 11th grader.

The culminating experience with the community mentor is a 20 week internship which occurs during the Kornerstone student's 5th year (12th grade). Ideally, the student will be linked with the community mentor in a field of interest for three years.

Community Mentorship Program

  • Year 5 (12th Grade) = Student engages in a 20 week internship with their community mentor.
